In a ping pong tournament, singles matches are best-of-seven games. Each game is played to 11 points, with a ‘win by two’ format. If there is a tie at 10-10, the game is won by the first player to score two points more than the opposition. Players change ends when one player has scored five points in the last possible game. To win in singles, a player must win four out of seven games.
Team matches consist of four singles matches and one doubles match. The games are played over the best-of-five format. A team must win three out of five games to be declared the winner.
Players advance through the draw by winning matches. Losers are eliminated until the field is down to four players/teams. Semifinal winners advance to meet in the gold-medal final; the semifinal losers compete for bronze.
Each singles draw features 64 entries with a single-elimination format. No more than two players per nation are allowed. Team contests involve 32 teams (16 men’s and 16 women’s). The team format is similar to singles, with two singles matches starting the contest, followed by a doubles match and two more singles matches if needed.
