Adoption in Thailand is when a child is legally placed with adoptive parents who are not the child’s biological parents. This process involves transferring parental responsibilities and rights from the natural parents to the adoptive parents through an adoption order.
Types of Adoption in Thailand
- Thailand Domestic Adoption: This type is for adoptive parents who live in Thailand.
- Thailand Inter-Country Adoption: This is for foreigners who want to adopt a Thai child and raise them outside of Thailand.
Qualifications for Foreign Applicants
To adopt a child in Thailand as a foreigner, there are some preliminary qualifications to meet:
- The applicant must be at least 25 years old and at least 15 years older than the adopted child.
- The foreign applicant must be legally eligible to adopt a child in their home country, which has diplomatic relations with Thailand.
- If applying as a couple, the foreign applicant must have a legitimate spouse.
Applying for Adoption in Thailand
Foreigners can apply for adoption in Thailand through different avenues:
- Foreigners residing outside Thailand can submit the adoption application through the Competent Authority in their country.
- Foreigners residing inside Thailand can submit the application to the Child Adoption Center of the Department of Social Development and Welfare (DSDW) in Bangkok or their respective province.
- Those with temporary domicile in Thailand must have proof of residency and work permit, along with completing a six-month pre-adoption placement.
